3d Widgets for MakeHuman

Project 5

MakeHuman is a free software for the modelling of 3-Dimensional characters.

The Project: Probe the innovative concept of 3D widgets

For the next software revision MakeHuman wants to use a new GUI, based on a very innovative concept: 3D widgets.

We are not talking about a simple 3D-window interface, but one which each widget is a 3D object with "sensors" verts groups; designed directly by 3D artists (using their preferred software).

This means no limits in form, aspect, dimensions or functionality. No need to define many widget classes by developers. One class = infinite widgets. Each widget can be rotated and translated, meaning more information within a compact design (for example, a sphere that rotates along 3 axis can do the same as 3 traditional sliders).

Project tasks include:

  1. Replace actual body-panel and targets-panel with the 3D-widgets
  2. Test the usability of new ideas, using a work-in-progress prototype
  3. Write a final paper with the results.
